You're Not Crazy....

You're not crazy or exhausted. You're in the throes of BURNOUT.

Listen, what kind of Employment Strategist would I be if I didn't highlight the fact from fiction. An unrequited relationship this is not, and there is no benefit for me to see anyone in the world of employment bottoming out without attempting to catch you before you fall.

It's enough for an employee to suffer this response. For entrepreneurs, gig workers, and small business owners, it's severely devastating and often a job within itself to overcome.

So, how do you spot burnout, and what can you do about it?

Well, the first part of that question is relatively simple to answer. Your body. YOU are the finely tuned instrument that emits specific signals in response to burnout.

1) Burnout, the cost of multi-tasking instead of singularly focusing or delegating tasks, assignments, or roles for fear of second-rate results or lack of help.
2) The boiling point to which the lack of usable capacity to function ceases to exist.

It's that gnawing in the pit of your core or consistent headache you can't shake no matter how many pain relievers you consume. Here's the insanity of it all. YOU know something is wrong, and you need to do something ASAP, but you suppress it until your instrument malfunctions or worse.

At that point, nothing seems to rekindle your passion. Physically, mentally, emotionally, you retreat, often without even knowing it. There isn't a right combination of words to describe the feeling, just you're not the same, and the yearning to get back to your former self is tearing you to pieces.

What causes it? The usual reply, stress or the overwhelming burdens to provide for others. Facts, let me add some additional causes.:

  1. Fear of failure

  2. The need to meet someone else's impossible standards

  3. Right intentions, wrong pursuits

  4. No help

  5. Battling seemingly insurmountable obstacles

The list is infinitely endless.

Handling burnout is never easy. Life is happening all around us. The more we feel the pull of our instrument, tugging at us, the more it seems hurdles, obstacles, and situations demand our attention. Consequently, we swallow burnout until we burn up.

Wanna know a secret?

Whatever opportunity, reward, achievement you desire is desiring you and waiting for you when you need it.

Not saying it will be a piece of cake. To get what you want, merely prioritize why and how you can obtain it.

Here are a few things to remember.:

  • YOU MATTER IN THIS WORLD

  • BURNOUT ISN'T PERMANENT

  • SELF CARE ISN'T A HASHTAG, IT'S A WAY OF DAILY LIFE

  • NEVER LET ANYONE DETERMINE YOUR WORTH/VALUE

  • THERE IS ALWAYS ANOTHER JOB, ONLY ONE YOU

  • YOU AREN'T A ROBOT STOP ACTING LIKE IT

  • BREATHING & MUSIC IS THERAPEUTIC

  • SEEKING HELP DOESN'T MAKE YOU WEAK

  • DON'T TRADE YOUR SANITY FOR A SALARY

  • TOXIC BEHAVIORS, PEOPLE, ENVIRONMENTS DON'T CHANGE UNLESS YOU DO (REMOVE YOUR PRESENCE)

  • DON'T ALLOW STEREOTYPES, BIASES, GENDER, SOCIETAL NORMS STUNT YOUR GROWTH

You can douse burnout with fluid treatments. However, nothing should replace professional assistance or contacting services to get the support you need. I remind my clients. For every problem, a solution. Often, within your control. Whatever is not, once you communicate your needs with no resolve, look for new healthier options elsewhere.

In closing, don't avoid the warning signs your body is giving. You can always rebuild more successful connections, reputations, businesses. Use your accrued time off to get away, no time off, find mental escapes (e.g., a favorite song, treat, book, conversation with a friend) to tide you over as you assess the level and degree of burnout for individualized care.

Being honest about your burnout creates the space to develop the best strategizes to defeat it.
